Help! I am moving to
Florida and I don’t know anything about the school systems there. What Florida
schools are good? What Florida schools should I stay away from? Where can I
find good information about Florida schools?
Right here!
Although we are very familiar
with the schools here in Southwest Florida, we can not give you any opinion
regarding which schools are “good” or “bad”. As licensed Realtors, we are
prohibited from giving advice regarding this issue or even telling you our
opinions. What we can do, however, is provide you with the best resources
available that will make it easier for you to research answer these questions
for yourself.
We know that choosing a home
frequently depends on the surrounding school districts. Not only is it
important for the education of your current or future children, but it can also
promise a better resale value of your home in the future. For these reasons, we
encourage you to soak up every ounce of knowledge that you can. The Moore Team
is here to help!
School zones or boundaries
are determined by the school board of a given county. The
Sarasota County School Board,
The Charlotte County School Board,
etc. To find out what school zone any given address is in, you can always call
the pertaining school board or ask a Realtor!
Sometimes, even if you live
in an area zoned for school A, you can request a student transfer so that the
student can attend school B instead. Sometimes these transfers are permitted
without any issues or complications, but other times stipulations may apply
(such as providing the student with daily transportation). Sometimes, student
transfers are denied altogether although this is rare. Typically there are just
restrictions and stipulations in place to hinder it from happening and if your
family has no problem with the restrictions or stipulations, a transfer is no
problem.
As a parent, it is your
responsibility to know where your child is supposed to attend school, assess the
safety of the school and judge the quality of the school. Realtors can not do
this for you!
FSIR or,
Florida School Indicators Report
is an excellent resource to have. You can search for data and statistics about
any school in the state and the information is divided into categories such as:
-
% of Students Absent 21 Days or More
-
FCAT Scores
-
% of Classes Taught by Teachers from Another Field
- Incidents of Crime and Violence
-
Number of Suspension
-
Average Years of Experience for Teachers
-
% of Teachers with Advanced Degrees
…and SO much more! This
website provides a plethora of information on any school in Florida.
That being said, here are
some other phenomenal resources to check out:
